Mountain fritillary

Boloria napaea

A brownish-yellow fritillary with angular hindwings and fine grey-black markings. It is common throughout the Swedish mountain range from northern Dalarna to Treriksröset. The larvae feed on alpine violet and alpine bistort.

Flight period

Flying from the end of June or the beginning of July, with occasional individuals arriving in August.

Habitat

Herbaceous mountain grasses and birch woodlands near the tree line.

Identifying features

Wingspan 31–43 millimetres with angular hindwings. The upper side of the wings is brown-yellow with fine grey-black markings; the underside is yellow to reddish-brown. The faint markings on the underside of the forewings distinguish it from cranberry fritillary.

Distribution

Widespread throughout the entire Swedish mountain range, from Northern Dalarna to Treriksröset.

Biology

The larvae feed on mountain violet and wormroot; the development is multi-year, likely two-year.
