Pearl-bordered Fritillary

A yellow-red fritillary, common in several open habitats in Sweden. It is recognised by the rounded silver-white marginal spots on the hindwing underside. The larvae mainly feed on violets.

Flight period

From the beginning of June to the beginning of July in the south, and later in the north; on the mountain from the end of June or the beginning of July to the end of July or the beginning of August.

Habitat

Various open habitats, including meadows and peat bogs.

Identifying features

Wingspan 31–45 millimetres. On top are the wings yellow-red with fine black markings; the underside of the hindwing is less contrastive than in small pearl-bordered fritillary, with round, silver-white edge markings.

Occurs throughout Sweden and is common in several open natural types.

Biology

The larvae primarily feed on violets; possibly on bog bilberry on peat moss.
