Bog Fritillary

Boloria eunomia

A medium-sized fritillary with rounded wings and six white spots with black rings on the hindwing underside. It is fairly common from Svealand northwards and lives on open peat bogs.

Flight period

Flights south from mid-June to mid-July, north later and sometimes into August.

Habitat

Open peat moss.

Identifying features

Wingspan 29–40 millimetres with round wings. The underside of the hindwing has white edge markings and six white spots with black rings in a row. The black-ringed spots are the most distinctive characteristic of the species.

Distribution

Relatively common from Svealand and north in Sweden.

Biology

The larvae live on open peat bogs; larvae raised in captivity prefer cranberry, but Swedish expertise on this topic is uncertain.
