Araschnia levana

A day-flying butterfly with two distinctly different forms: the spring form is orange and black, while the summer form is black and white. It was first observed in Sweden in 1982 and is expanding northward. The underside resembles a fine mesh.

Flight period

Flies in May–June and in July–August; in warm years, a third generation may appear in September–October.

Habitat

Moist deciduous forest hollows with stinging nettle.

Identifying features

Wingspan 31–43 millimetres. The spring generation is orange with black markings, while the summer generation is black with white bands. The underside is brownish with a light netted pattern, which has given the species its name.

Similar species

No similar species are described in the sources consulted.

Distribution

The first Swedish discovery was made in 1982; the species is expanding northwards and is now found in the forests of Göta and Svea counties.

Biology

The larvae feed on stinging nettle.
