Identifying features
Wingspan 24–27 mm. The male and female are quite similar, both with a brown dorsal wing surface; the female has a few orange, crescent-shaped markings along the hindwing margin. The ventral wing surface is brownish-grey with dark spots within white rings, yellowish-orange markings that almost form a continuous band along the wing margin, and a white wedge in the middle of the hindwing that extends to the pale discal spot.
Similar species
Compared in the booklet with Silvery argus: the two species often occur quite frequently in the same locations in Trysil, but Geranium argus completes the flight time when Silvery argus is well underway in mid-July.
Distribution
In the southern Norway region of mountainous areas, from north to Nord-Trøndelag; it is lacking along the entire coast, but is found in suitable locations in southern Troms. In Trysil, it often occurs together with Silvery argus. Classified as Least Concern (LC).
Biology
The bog beetle is the only larval food source. Geranium argus overwinters as a larva, while Silvery argus overwinters as an egg.
