Woodland ringlet

Erebia medusa

Woodland ringlet is a strongly northern species that, in Norway, is found only in Finnmark. It is a medium-sized, uniformly brown brown butterfly with small, yellow-edged spots near the wing tips.

Flight period

Flying in June–August in fields and hills in the lowlands.

Identifying features

Medium-sized ringlet moth with a wingspan of 34–40 mm. A solid brown butterfly, where the pattern on the upper and lower sides of the wings is almost identical. Both forewings and hindwings usually have approximately three small, yellow-edged black spots near the tip; the largest of these often have a white core.

Similar species

Can be confused with the other Erebia species in Norway, particularly arran brown and Dewy ringlet; study the pattern of spots carefully.

Distribution

A strongly northern species. Found in Finnmark, near Utsjok in Northern Finland, and in northern Russia eastwards to the Lena. It is absent from Swedish Lapland.

Biology

The larvae live on bog grass (Milium effusum) and marsh grass (Poa palustris) and take two years to develop.
