Flight period

May–August, especially August.

Habitat

Cultivated landscapes with flowers, often meadows with lucerne. A very strong flier.

Identifying features

Wingspan 44–50 mm. Both pairs of wings have an orange base colour. Along the outer edge, there is a wide dark brown area, which in the female has yellow spots. The forewing has a round, brown central spot, and the hindwing has an irregular, orange-red central spot. In both sexes, the hindwing has grey dusting, stronger in the female.

Similar species

Reminder about Hecla Sulphur, but this one has smaller, more rounded wings, and the two species’ ranges do not overlap.

Distribution

In Scandinavia, solely as an immigrant. Found a few times in the southeastern Norway region. The species does not survive here during winter.

Biology

Eggs are typically laid on lucerne, and to a lesser extent on bird's-foot trefoil. The larva is green with a yellow lateral stripe and reaches approximately 36 mm in length. Overwintering occurs as a larva, but the species does not survive the winter in Norway.
