Alpine argus

Agriades orbitulus

Alpine argus is a light blue butterfly that is only found in limestone-rich mountain areas above 800 metres. The underside of the hindwing has large white spots. The flight period is from June to July.

Habitat

Rocky mountain areas above 800 metres above sea level, preferably south-facing rocky locations with flowers.

Identifying features

Wingspan 25–29 mm. The male has a light blue upperwing surface; the female is dark brown. The underside of the wings is similar in both sexes: grey with large white spots on the hindwing, while the underside of the forewing is almost entirely a uniform light brownish-grey. A small, dark discal spot and a faint bluish-green patch are present near the base of the wings.

Distribution

Found only in mountainous areas in Norway from Hardangervidda to Rondane, Dovre, and northeastward to Herjedalen in Sweden. In Europe and Asia, it is found only in isolated locations in mountainous areas above 800 metres.

Biology

Much remains unknown about development and lifestyle. The egg is white, round, and flat; the larva is greenish with a black head and often a lighter lengthwise stripe on the side.
