Cranberry blue

Cranberry blue is a dark blue-violet blue-winged species that lives in bogs and in pine forests up to the tree line. The underside of the wing has only 2–3 orange spots. The flight period is from the end of June to August.

Habitat

Grass-covered meadows and bogs, but also in fir forests. Found up to the tree line.

Identifying features

Wingspan 23–29 mm. The male has dark blue-violet wing uppersides; the female has dark blue-violet wing uppersides with a broad dark band inside the wing margin. The wing undersides are grey with dark spots in white rings; the hindwing underside has only a few, 2–3 yellow-orange spots. At the wing base is a small, indistinct blue-green patch.

Distribution

Throughout the eastern Norway region, also in Finnmark where it exists in the mountains below the tree line. Missing along the entire coast (Vest-Norway) from Kristiansand and northwards, and in the southeast Norway region also along the coast. In Northern Europe generally with a fairly stable occurrence; further south in Europe in decline.

Biology

The egg is white and green, round and flat. The larva is greenish with lighter longitudinal stripes.
