Small blue

Flight period

From mid-May to early July. Occasionally, an extra brood in warm summers, from August to early September.

Habitat

Dry habitats such as roadside verges, gravel pits, and similar locations with reasonable populations of the host plant.

Identifying features

Wingspan: 17-25 mm. The small size is often enough to identify the species.

Similar species

Large specimens can be mistaken for small specimens of Mazarine blue, but, most often, the chances of confusion in nature are few. The distinctive markings on the underside only allow for confusion with Mazarine blue, which is usually significantly larger, with a brown upper side in females and a blue one in males, and a greyish underside (similar to small blue).

Distribution

One of the most common Danish blue butterflies, which lives in small, very localised colonies on warm, dry sites. It is common in the northern half of Jutland, on Læsø and Samsø, on Funen, as well as in large parts of North Zealand and in several locations in South Zealand, and in a few places on Møn.

Biology

The larva feeds exclusively on kidney vetch.
