Flight period

The flight period is June to August. The larva can be found overwintering from late August to late May.

Habitat

Throughout Denmark, in areas with abundant grass. It can also be found even in small, dense clearings.

Identifying features

Wingspan: 38–47 mm. The wing uppersides are dark brown with 1–3 faint eyespots; the upperside eyespots are often almost entirely absent.

Similar species

Ringlet has a very distinctive appearance and should not be confused with other Danish butterfly species. In some cases, when a worn individual is encountered without seeing the underside, it can resemble meadow brown.

Distribution

Widespread and ubiquitous throughout Denmark. Likely the most common Danish day butterfly.

Biology

The butterfly, which is active in almost all kinds of weather, has a slow and hopping flight. In the morning and evening, it is often seen basking with its wings widely spread in low vegetation.
