The flight period is from June to September. The larva is observed from the beginning of July to the end of May.

Identifying features

Wingspan: 37–56 mm. The wing uppersides are brownish and yellowish, with cream-coloured areas in the female.

Similar species

The species cannot be confused with other Danish day butterflies.

Distribution

Widespread and common throughout Denmark, but primarily in coastal areas. In Jutland, however, the species is often found well inland.

Biology

The butterfly likes to sit very still on the ground and bask with its wings folded upright, even in overcast weather. The grey-white underside of its hindwing provides effective camouflage.
