Flight period

The typical flight period is from July to August. However, in good years, the flight period can begin as early as June and may continue until September.

Habitat

The species flies in deciduous woodland with clearings. Keeping cattle or deer in the woodland benefits the species: the lower foliage is eaten, allowing more light and warmth to reach the violets and larvae.

Identifying features

Wingspan: 54–70 mm. Denmark’s largest fritillary.

Similar species

The male can be confused with larger fritillary butterflies and other fritillaries in flight, but can be identified by its size. When at rest, the scent scales are a reliable characteristic.

Distribution

Previously widespread throughout the country in deciduous forests, but has disappeared from many locations in Jutland, on Funen, and in North Zealand. In Central and Southern Zealand, locally abundant.

Biology

Display flight occurring in the air. Both sexes fly with a high wingbeat frequency in a straight line, while the male flies around the female and releases pheromones.
