Flight period

Common clouded yellow can be observed from May to June and a native or immigrant generation in early August.

Habitat

Slopes, gullies, and barren lands. Overwintering does not appear possible north of the Alps.

Identifying features

Wingspan: 40-50 mm. Common clouded yellow is orange, but appears yellow in flight.

Similar species

It is unlikely to be confused with pale clouded yellow. In flight its yellow colour is much brighter than that of pale clouded yellow.

Distribution

Most observations in Southeast Denmark, and often along the coastlines. Certain years see invasions of this species, most recently in 2009.

Biology

Also a migratory species, though far less common than pale clouded yellow and considerably more heat-demanding. The egg is laid as with pale clouded yellow, primarily on lucerne and other pea flowers.
