Flight period

The first males usually emerge in the 2nd week of May.

Habitat

Sandy habitats such as heathland, dunes and dry grassland. In Denmark, the dingy skipper was formerly also found in sandy woodland clearings.

Identifying features

A fairly large skipper. Both the hindwings and forewings are grey-brown, with faintly jagged markings on the forewings.

Similar species

Dingy skipper can be distinguished from any other Danish swallowtail butterfly due to its characteristic appearance. However, during flight, it may be found in the same locations as the marbled swallowtail (Euclidia mi) and brown swallowtail (Euclidia glyphica), which are also common in those areas.

Distribution

Dingy skipper has never been common in Denmark, but has undeniably become even rarer over the past 50 years. In Jutland, it has previously been found in all areas, though it was mostly quite dispersed.

Biology

Lightning-fast, small butterfly, which is almost exclusively active in warm weather with sunshine. The males are very territorial, as they chase all other insects away from their territory.
